Summer

I'll take it from here, Dad. I was telling the story you know.

Summer's first day. With everthing that has happened to me, you think my luck would change...
A while ago (October, 5, 2002 to be exact), the people I own decided I needed a friend, someone to play with so I would be alone so much. They never bothered to ask me... sheesh. So, on that day we went for a car ride. I thought we were going to the shore. My mistake, we ended up at the West Jersey Animal Shelter. It seems my mom works with a lady who volunteers there. She told them about a little girl beagle that was found wandering the streets near the shelter. She was about 10 months old. When we got there, she was tied up outside like they knew we were coming. We met, sniffed, and went for a short walk together. I didn't want to scare her so I didn't put up a fuss. Mom and dad took turns playing with her while keeping me occupied. She seemed nice enough at the time. Small, shy and quiet. (Boy, did she fool ALL of us!)

The next thing I know, dad is putting HER in MY seat, in MY car! He then puts me in and gets between us. Mom gets in front and drives us home. She shook and whimpered all the way. I don't know what she was afraid of, its a car ride! This is a GOOD thing. She got so scared, she peed on my dad... and I thought I had issues.

Hey you... Wanna play? We arrive home and she proceeds to sniff everything. Then she found my stash of toys. She started pulling them all out. It was like she never saw a stuffy before. She starts running around the house with them. Then she takes them outside. "Hey, those are mine!" Mom and dad start talking and I hear mom say this word, "Summer". Something about it being dad's favorite season and her being "bright as a summer's day". I didn't quite understand what it meant until I noticed they were calling her that. Why are they naming her, she isn't staying... is she?

Well, after several weeks I came to realize she isn't leaving. Actually, Summer isn't that bad. She is very friendly. We play chase, tug, and we wrestle. Because of her, by back legs have gotten a lot stronger. I can go even farther now without my cart. She isn't perfect. Remember when I said she was shy and quiet. That wore off after a month. Now she barks and can get bossy. She doesn't share all time and can get really jealous. She is a chewer too. Mom and dad will get her trained... some day.

She is happy here, so I guess she can stay. After all, everyone needs a good home.
